Anger—Memories of My Life

When it comes, for example, to anger or impatience over one’s troubles, don’t we find that this passion is extremely varied and changeable not only from one species to another, one individual to another, but even in the same individual, depending on the circumstances? Put a man in trouble and let him get used to it. However impatient by nature, with time he’ll become inured to it and extremely patient. (I can testify personally to every part of this proposition.) Imagine that this same man has never suffered at all, or let him get used to things going well again, or imagine another individual in one of these two circumstances, even someone extremely calm by nature. Every upset, however slight, will make him impatient. Now what could be a more fundamental consequence of self-regard than this impatience with any trouble that befalls a self in love with itself? Yet this impatience is greater or smaller depending on temperament, species, and character, and then varies in the same individual according to circumstances and habits. Likewise the self-regard that produces it.
